Tokyo’s world-class public transport system makes getting around the city surprisingly easy despite its size. Trains and metros connect every neighbourhood efficiently, while buses, taxis and walking fill the gaps for shorter distances. Understanding how the network works helps you move around quickly, save money and explore the city with confidence.

Getting Around Tokyo

  • Tokyo has two main airports Narita International Airport (NRT) and Haneda Airport (HND). The Options to reach the centre are:

    Narita International Airport:

Narita Express (N’EX) to Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Yokohama (about 60–90 min).

Keisei Skyliner to Ueno/Nippori (fastest option, ~40–45 min).

Airport buses are convenient if you have luggage.

    From Haneda Airport:

Tokyo Monorail or Keikyu Line connect quickly to central Tokyo (20–30 min).

Taxis are reasonably priced late at night compared to Narita.

  • Trains & Subways: Operated by JR East and multiple Tokyo Metro lines; extremely frequent, punctual, and covering all tourist areas.

JR Yamanote Line: A loop train connecting major districts including Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno, Tokyo Station, and Akihabara — the most useful line for visitors.

Tickets: Use a rechargeable Suica or PASMO IC card for seamless tap-in travel across trains, subways, and buses. Single fares typically range from ¥170–¥300 depending on distance.

Bus: Useful for short neighbourhood trips where trains don’t run directly, though trains are usually faster and easier for visitors.

Trains run frequently from early morning to around midnight.

  • Taxis: Majority are clean, safe, and reliable but expensive for long distances.

Uber operates in Tokyo but often dispatches licensed taxis, so prices are similar to regular cabs.

  • Tokyo is extremely walkable within neighborhoods, with wide sidewalks, clear signage, and safe streets.

Areas like Shibuya, Asakusa, Ginza, and Shinjuku are ideal for exploring on foot.

Expect to walk a lot but distances between neighborhoods are best covered by train.
