When Should You visit Tokyo?
Tokyo’s four distinct seasons mean the timing of your visit can completely change your experience of the city. From cherry blossom season and vibrant autumn colours to humid summers and crisp winters, each time of year offers something different to see and do. Choosing when to go helps you balance weather, festivals, crowds and prices depending on your travel style.

Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Tokyo thanks to mild temperatures and cherry blossom season. Late March to early April brings sakura, when parks and riversides turn pink and locals gather for hanami (flower-viewing parties). Expect comfortable weather, but also larger crowds and higher prices during peak bloom weeks.

Summer in Tokyo is hot and humid, with June marked by a short rainy season. July and August feature vibrant festivals, traditional matsuri and spectacular fireworks displays like those along the Sumida River. While the heat can be intense, summer offers a lively atmosphere and fewer international tourists than spring or fall.

Autumn is widely considered the best time to visit Tokyo, combining cooler temperatures with stunning fall foliage. Maple trees turn red and gold in parks and temple grounds from late October to November. The weather is dry and pleasant, making it ideal for walking, sightseeing and day trips.

Winter is cold but generally sunny, with very little snowfall in the city. It’s a great time to enjoy winter illuminations, New Year shrine visits and fewer crowds at major attractions. Prices are often lower (except around New Year), and the clear skies make for excellent city views.
