Getting around Rome is easy thanks to its extensive public transport system, including buses, trams, and the metro. Many of the city’s famous landmarks are close together, making walking one of the best ways to explore and soak up the history. Taxis and ride-hailing services are also widely available, especially late at night or for longer journeys.

Getting Around Rome

  • Rome is served by 2 main airports. Options to reach the city centre:

Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) Airport: Take the Leonardo Express train to Termini Station (~30 min, €14). Alternatively, regional trains, buses (€6–€10), or taxis (~€48 fixed fare to city center) are available.

Ciampino Airport: Mostly served by shuttle buses to Termini Station (~40 min, €6–€8) or taxis (~€30–€35).

  • Metro: Two main lines (A & B) cover key attractions like the Colosseum, Vatican (Ottaviano), and Termini. Tickets: €1.50 for single ride (100 min), day passes available.

Buses & Trams: Extensive network covering most neighbourhoods. Same tickets as metro; validate when boarding.

Tickets: Purchase at stations, tobacco shops, or via the RATP Roma app.

  • Official taxis are white and metered; flag at a stand or call (+39 06 3570). Airport rides have fixed fares.

Uber: exists but mostly premium services; regular taxis are generally easier and cheaper in Rome.

  • Rome’s historic center is very walkable, with most major attractions within 15–25 min of each other. Cobblestone streets and narrow alleys mean comfortable shoes are a must.

Walking often provides the fastest way to explore small piazzas, fountains, and hidden gems not easily reached by bus or metro.
