Getting Around Budapest

Getting around Budapest is easy thanks to its efficient public transport system, including metros, trams, and buses that connect all parts of the city. The iconic yellow trams run along the Danube and offer some of the best views while travelling between major sights. Walking is also a great option in the city centre, especially in Pest, where many attractions are close together.

  • Budapest’s main airport is Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD). Options to reach the city centre:

    Airport Shuttle / Bus 100E – Direct bus from the airport to Deák Ferenc Square (central Budapest). Takes ~35–45 minutes. Tickets cost around 1,200 HUF (~€3).

    Taxi / Private Transfer – Official airport taxis have a flat fare of ~9,000–10,000 HUF (~€25–€27) to downtown. Apps like Bolt are also available.

    Car Rental – Available at the airport; useful if you plan trips outside the city.

    Airport Shuttle Services – Pre-booked private shuttles are available for convenience and luggage.

  • Metro – 4 lines (M1, M2, M3, M4). Fastest way to cover long distances.

    Trams – Modern and frequent; the Tram 4 & 6 run along the Grand Boulevard 24/7.

    Buses – Cover areas not reached by metro/tram.

    Tickets & Passes – Single ride ~450 HUF (~€1), 24-hour pass ~1,650 HUF (~€4), 72-hour pass ~4,150 HUF (~€10). Tickets must be validated at machines.

    BKK App – Official app for routes, schedules, and ticket purchase.

  • Taxi: Standard fares are higher than public transport: ~300–400 HUF per km (~€0.80–€1), plus a base fare.

    Uber: Its used as a booking system for licensed taxis.

    Tips: Always useofficial apps or dispatch services; avoid hailing random street taxis.

  • Budapest’s city center is highly walkable, especially District V (Inner City/Pest) and Castle District (Buda).

    Many major attractions (Parliament, Chain Bridge, St. Stephen’s Basilica) are within walking distance along the Danube.

    Cobblestone streets in the Castle District and some hilly areas in Buda may require sturdy shoes.

    Walking is the best way to enjoy cafés, ruin bars, and riverfront views.
